Birth of Italian Coffee Maker Culture
Birth of Italian Coffee Maker Culture

You can’t think about great coffee without thinking about the Italian coffee maker.

Italy is not the home of coffee. Unique and delicious beans are grown throughout the world. Only this morning, I enjoyed some coffee from Ethiopian beans.

A bold and robust coffee that contributed to a great start to my day. Equally delicious beans are grown in South America, Hawaii, the Middle East, and worldwide.

Italy is not the home of coffee – but a strong argument can be made that it is the home of “coffee culture.”

The Italian coffee maker evolves that culture – that love of perfectly brewed coffee.

The Moka – the original Italian coffee maker

Long before the fancy, multi-functional coffee makers you see in fine coffee shops today, there was the Moka pot.

The Moka is a simple stove-top Italian coffee maker not unlike the percolator pots common to American homes. The Moka was designed to use on an open flame stove or even an outdoor fire.

The pot consists of a bottom chamber that holds the water, a filter in the middle of the coffee, and an upper section that receives the brewed coffee.

The water boils up from the bottom and through the ground coffee. Pressure drives the coffee up through an inverted funnel, and the coffee winds up in the upper chamber of the pot.

These were the humble beginnings of espresso and the Italian coffee maker.

If you appreciate the flavor and aroma of freshly ground and brewed beans, I urge you to invest in a Moka pot. They are pretty inexpensive and easy to find.

It will make a perfect addition to any coffee lover’s kitchen and make a fast cup of delicious brew for guests.

Evolution of the Italian coffee maker culture

Coffee was imported from Italy’s trading partners with Middle Eastern countries and Africa in the earliest days. Its original uses were primarily medicinal.

However, it wasn’t long before beans were being grown in more accessible locations and the Italians developed a taste for coffee as a standard drink.

From that point on, the Italians didn’t just drink coffee – they savored it, improved it, and it became a part of their national identity.

This has led to the development and refinement of the Italian coffee maker into the gleaming machines we know today.

Not only will they create a perfect espresso, but just about any fine coffee beverage you can name. All of it is perfectly ground, blended, brewed, injected, and dispensed into that one perfect cup of coffee for you to enjoy.
